After a month in Aquin, we have settled into our daily routine. While it may be a little different from yours, I think you would agree it’s pretty interesting. Here goes:
8:30 PM : Go to bed! Lights out! The sun sets here at about 5:30, and since there is very little twilight in the tropics, by 8:30 you feel like it’s quite late. Which, after working all day, it is. The stars are numerous, and the moon rising over the hills is beautiful.
11:00 PM: Mumble awake. Is that drums? Yup, someone is playing drums Most likely a Vodoun ceremony going on down the way.
12:00 PM: Cows bellow somewhere in the distance.
3:00 AM: Drumming stops. Thank God. Hmmm… now they are blowing horns.
4:00 AM: Roosters start up, and it seems like they are hiding under the bed. Christy says a few words that might get her sent to principal’s office.
5:00 AM: Roosters joined by dogs, burros, cows and every other creature great and small.
6:00 AM: Alarm goes off. Why do we even set it? Tim goes out to begin watering plants. He hasn’t had coffee, so he often ends up watering his shoes.

The town of Aquin sits on a narrow plain that is pushed on one side by rugged, brown hills from the north and the tranquil, blue Caribbean Ocean to the south. To find the town on a map, do this: make your right hand into a lobster claw, with your thumb being the bottom pincer and the rest of your hands being the top. Port-au-Prince would be the joint where your thumb meets your hand, and Aquin would be at the last knuckle on your thumb.
Not that this is important, but it gives you a visual that we get rain from either the ocean, or the mountains, or the bay behind the mountains. When the rain (lapli) comes from the mountains we can see it creep over the ridges and then cascade down the slopes until the black clouds come over the house and then the rest of the town. It usually doesn't rain too long, but it can be a tremendous downpour when it happens. And this is when the fun begins.
