So we’re back— tanned, rested and ready after a nine-day sojourn to the Dominican Republic. After taking a bus from Port-au-Prince to Santo Domingo (where we had to pay a bribe to a customs official in the form of one package of crackers) we found a nice hotel in the Zona Colonial where we spent three days alternately wandering around and sitting in the air-conditioned room after taking warm showers. The main attractions in Santo Domingo are all the old buildings, which used to be actual colonial buildings and are now actual refurbished colonial buildings that look just like they were 500 years ago when Columbus first landed, only with more tour guides and T-shirt shops.
We got in the swing of things as we checked out cigar shops and made sure we told anyone within earshot that all those “Dominican” paintings are actually from Haiti, and in Haiti they are cheaper and painted better. Christy got to try on some Dominican women’s clothing, which comes in two sizes, tight and sub-dermal. And, when the Dominican men weren’t busy commenting on the passing women’s tight clothing, they were yelling about the baseball games on the TV. Evidently people still care about televised baseball, and they all live in the DR.
From Santo Domingo we took another bus to Bavaro, on the far eastern shore of the island. We were dropped at the front gate of the all-inclusive resort, much to the befuddlement of the doorman who couldn’t understand why two Americans were carting their bags into a resort, speaking a mixture of bad Spanish and Kreyol and insisting that they really did have a reservation. After speaking to the front desk on the phone, it was finally decided that we really did have a reservation, and because the hotel was “cinco estrellas” they dispatched a golf cart to pick up the hoi polloi at the front gate. (Hey- when a place has five stars you can’t just balance your bags on your head and walk up the front driveway. Where do you think you are, Haiti?)
